Book Selection:  (return to top of page)

Teachers are encouraged to have their students select books from the Bain Library and may use the library for book selection in the following ways.

Teachers need to consult with the librarian prior to bringing in a class for book selection.  At that time, the goals of the project will be discussed and the librarian will make sure that appropriate books are available.

Class Research Visits:  (return to top of page)

Teachers who wish to bring their classes to the library for research purposes may sign up for time slots in consultation with the librarian.  Teachers need to meet with the Library Media Specialist to plan for a class visit to the library.  At that time, a copy of the assignment will be given to the librarian, class visits will be scheduled, and project resources will be discussed.  For each project, the classroom teacher must have already accompanied the class to the library before the class can come to the library with a substitute.  Teachers accompanying a class should monitor their class and attend to their students' activities and behavior.

Accelerated Reader Program:  (return to top of page)

Hugh B. Bain Middle School has implemented a program designed to motivate students to read. The Accelerated Reader Program combines reading books with computer-based comprehension tests to inspire kids to read. The Accelerated Reader software also manages student records to track reading performance.

Here's how the program works:

  • Each student selects his or her own reading material from the list of over 3000 Accelerated Reader Titles available at Bain.

  • When the student has completed the book, he or she may take a computerized multiple choice test. The test is designed to verify that the student has read the book. When the test is completed, the program provides an instant score.
  • Students read their books at their own pace. As students grow more involved with literature, they can recommend them to their friends.
  • A list of books included in Bain’s Accelerated Reader collection can be found at the Bain Library and the Cranston Public Library. Students can find copies of these books in the Bain Library, the public library, or in book stores.

Reading Cafés:  (return to top of page)

One of the best ways to help students become lifelong readers is to provide them with enjoyable reading experiences. A Reading Café is the perfect atmosphere for creating an enjoyable reading experience.  The Hugh B. Bain Library is happy to assist teachers in hosting Reading Cafés.  Teachers can stop by the library to book times for Reading Cafés

Café’s have always been regarded as comfortable places in which to read; and the many varied reading materials and comfortable setting of the Hugh B. Bain Library lend themselves well to a Reading Café activity. In a Reading Café, students can read books or magazines of their choice, listen to a story being read aloud, and orally share their favorite books with their classmates. A snack and beverage help to make the environment of the café comfortable and enjoyable.

Book Swap:  (return to top of page)

Once a year, the Bain Library hosts a book swap.  For several weeks prior to the book swap, students can bring in any of their middle school level books that they no longer want.  During the week of the book swap, students can come to the library and choose different books from among all of the books that were brought in.  Students will get to choose one book for every book they brought in to the book swap.  The book swap is usually held during Reading Week which takes place each spring.  See Mrs. Blais for more details about the Bain Library Book Swap.

Book Fair:  (return to top of page)

To encourage reading, Hugh B. Bain Middle School hosts a yearly Scholastic Book Fair.  The fair runs during school hours for approximately one week, and every Bain student receives an opportunity to visit the book fair.  Proceeds from the book fair benefit the Bain Library.  Parents are encouraged to stop by the book fair any day to browse and purchase books.  Contact Mrs. Blais for more details about Bain's annual book fair.
