School Violence: Prevention in RI

In response to the recent school shootings, Cranston West has decided to take new measures to make sure that students and faculty are safe. Governor Donald Carcieri also held a “Safe Schools Summit” in order to educate administration and staff of Rhode Island schools on how to better secure their campuses.  This summit was held on October 10 at the CCRI Knight Campus.  Several speakers talked to the audience about safety-related topics.

“All of us have been horrified at the recent spate of school shootings, and we want to make sure that we are doing all that we can to ensure that our schools are safe,” Governor Carcieri said in a press release on the Rhode Island state website.

“This summit is an important opportunity to bring together our local law enforcement officials and educators and engage in a dialogue about where we are and what steps we should take,” Carcieri also noted.

Principal Steven Knowlton has decided on several courses of action to protect Cranston West from violence.  In addition to enforcing the often lax pass policy for students walking around the school, Knowlton will include more regulation of faculty, students and visitors.  “We had already started to do some things before the governor’s summit; we are waiting on [visitors] report to office signs for all of the entrances to the school,” stated Knowlton.  Faculty will also have to sign in and out upon entering and leaving the school, and faculty ID’s are also being made, so that “students will feel better by being able to identify someone as supposed to be here.”
