MRS.
PARENTEAU’S BUSY BEES
Dear
Parent/Guardian:
Welcome to second grade! I am delighted that your child is in my class
this year. With your support and
encouragement, your child will be a part of many exciting and rewarding
academic experiences. I have included
some important information for the beginning of the school year. If you have any questions, then please
contact me through the school or through your child.
Students will be
given written homework Monday through Thursday.
The homework will be a review of the lessons that the children have been
working on throughout the week.
All students are
required to read twenty-five books during the school year according to the
Standards. A personal Home Reading Log will be a
required daily assignment. Reading Logs
must be initialed by a parent/guardian.
Independent reading allows students to experience reading for pleasure
as well as build knowledge, vocabulary and fluency.
Students will
receive a homework chart every Monday.
The students will place that chart in their homework folder. Check to make sure that your child completes
the homework listed for that day.
Homework is very important in reinforcing the day’s lessons!!
Here are some tips
on how to help your child with homework:
Most
importantly…Encourage your child to do their best work and put forth their best
effort.
Each Friday, your
child will take home their Friday Folder.
Inside will contain their tests and assignments. Review the tests and assignments with your
child and sign the form stating you reviewed the work with your child. The Folder must be returned on the next
school day.

Reading
instruction is at the individual student’s level through one on one and small
group instruction. We practice reading
in our reading centers. One group works
on a guided reading lesson while the other students work in small groups on
reviewing skills they’ve learned. The
students will be reading regularly in order to improve

We will be using the “Six Traits” as the basis of our writing instruction this year. The students will be using the writing process to
create original pieces.
The six traits are:
Ideas
Organization
Conventions
Voice
Word
Choice
Sentence
Fluency
Also, in penmanship we will be reviewing manuscript letters before moving to cursive. Proper formation, neatness, and spacing are encouraged. Please help to reinforce these at home.

We will be working with the Investigations Program. We will work on daily calendar skills focusing on patterns, time, money, place value, and counting skills. We will also learn problem solving strategies throughout the year.

We have science kits for each quarter of the school year. Each kit includes hands-on lessons and activities that the children just love! While they perform experiments, they will be making observations, asking questions, making a hypothesis, planning and doing a test, recording what happens, and finally drawing conclusions. These kits are a great way to build enthusiastic learners!!

We will be using literature, creating projects, and using our textbook to help assist students to reach the standards.

We will be using the computer in our classroom for special reading centers and assignment work.
