READING

In third grade, reading instruction is at the individual student’s level through one-on-one or small group daily reading lessons. Students participate in daily Guided Reading lessons using leveled books.  We will also be using components from the reading series Reading Street. Students receive a new book every few days, new vocabulary, and key English phrases/idioms, etc.. In addition, students use graphic organizers and “oral” retelling to analyze their text.

Third graders spend 15-20 minutes daily in D.E.A.R. time during the school day. Reading Logs will be used throughout the year to help your child meet the state standards. All students are required to read twenty-five books during the school year according to the Standards. Children need to read regularly in order to improve their comprehension skills and fluency/reading rate.
