A Glimpse of
Garden City’s Library Program
¨
Students in grades
one to five visit the school library once each week for one-half hour.
Kindergartners and pre-schoolers visit every other week.
¨
During the third
week of school each year, students begin borrowing books. Kindergarten borrows
from January to June. Pre-schoolers do not borrow books.
¨ The Cranston
school system follows a week one/week two schedule. During week one students
select books. Week two is reserved for lessons which include introduction to
authors and literature genres, research and map skills as well as technology
education.
The mission of the
library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users
of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished:
¨
by providing
intellectual and physical access to materials in all
formats
¨
by providing
instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and
using information and ideas
¨
by working with
other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual
students.
