THE KEY to doing number sentences is in the picture below!.

What can you learn from this picture?

It's all about BALANCE, right?

.

        • Number sentences are like a seesaw on a playground!

        • Think of the pivot point as the = sign

        • It's all about making things balance...

  • What you have on one side of the = sign, you must have on the other side!

Remember: What you have on one side of the = sign, you must have on the other!

.

It's all about balance!

.

Look at the sentence below:

How could we get this sentence to balance?

Can you find at least 2 ways to make the sentence true?

.

Here's one way!

We did what we had to so we could have 9 on both sides of the = sign!

Here's another way to make the sentence balance!

Again, we just made the numbers the same ON BOTH SIDES OF THE = SIGN!

Here's a new wrinkle on the same idea! The square will stand for a missing number.

Always remember: It's all about BALANCE!

    .

  • VERY FIRST THING: What do we have on the LEFT side of the = sign?

  • 7 + 2 = 9

  • The Left Side of the Sentence = 9

  • We know that if the LEFT side = 9, the RIGHT side must also = 9!

It looks like this!

......

Now the question is becoming easier, isn't it?

When you can, ALWAYS put the question into other words!

This question is asking, "What number + 3 equals 9?"

or "What do you have to add to 3 to get 9?"

.

Well, 6 + 3 = 9. The missing number must be 6, right?

Let's see if it balances.

.

 We have solved it!

Here's the problem again:

This is the same as saying:

We can move things around if it helps us to see them better.

Now we ask, "What number must we add to 3 to get 9?

This is true! 3 + 6 does equal 9!

We know that to BALANCE the sentence,

Now it makes sense!

Do the Math!

That is the same thing as saying

Now that's what I call BALANCE!

And that is really all you have to remember when attacking number sentences!
