TeamExpectations

1. Be on time for class.
2. Students will be prepared with all homework assignments.
3. Homework and classwork will be neat and on time.  Torn, wrinkled, fringed or untidy papers will not be accepted.
4. Books must be covered and brought to class each day along with notebooks and folders as needed.
5. Pens and pencils must be brought to class each day.
6. Students must bring their agenda book to every class.
7. Proper grammar, punctuation, and correct spelling are to be used in classes.
8. To make the best use of time, students are expected to carry independent reading materials with them.
9. Parents will be notified if a student misses several assignments or is receiving poor grades through progress reports and telephone calls.
10. When a teacher is absent, students are expected to adhere to team standards.
11. Display a positive attitude; be courteous and respectful of all students and teachers; improper language will not be tolerated.
12. All make up work is the responsibility of the student.  If you have been absent, then you must find out what you have missed.  You must make the arrangements for make up classwork, homework, tests, quizzes, etc.
13. No gum chewing.
14. Extra help is always available and it is the student's responsibility to as for such help.

EXTREME ENGLISH


      The following content areas will be covered in the eighth grade English program at Western Hills Middle School:

Literature Genres: short stories
                                 novel
                                 drama
                                 poetry

Grammar

Composition- A variety of writing forms such as expository, narrative, descriptive,
                        persuasive, reading & writing response journals, critiques, etc. will be 
                        studied.

Oral Communication-public speaking

Vocabulary

Spelling

Accelerated Reader

Grading Policy- 70%- compositions, tests, quizzes, special projects & Accelerated
                            Reader
                            20%- homework
                            10%- class participation

Homework- Homework will be assigned a minimum of three times per week. All
                     students should also be reading their Accelerated Reader books.

Test & Quizzes- Tests are announced in advance.
                             Quizzes may or may not be announced in advance.

EXTREME MATH


Classroom Procedure:
1.    Students are expected to enter class in an orderly and timely fashion.
2.    Students are to come to class prepared with their book, notebook, pen, pencil, and homework.
3.    While taking attendance, the students are to get out their homework.
4.    I always check and collect the homework every day.
5.    Any inappropriate behavior or language will have consequences including but not limited to time after school.

Homework:
1.    Homework is assigned almost every day.
2.    It must be neat, complete, on time, in pencil, and showing all work
3.    Homework is an integral part of their learning experience as well as means of obtaining a grade, so it is very important to complete all assignments.

Grading:
1.    All quizzes count as 30% of the grade. All tests count as 50%. This equates to 80% of the grade.
2.    Homework grade is given at the end of the quarter. This is worth 20% of the Grade.

Class participation is automatically incorporated into this area.
3.    A Notebook quiz is given every quarter. It is recorded as a regular quiz grade. This is designed to boost their grade-by taking notes and obtaining them even when they have been absent.

Make-up Work:
1.    All make-up work is the student’s responsibility. Students need to check for any missed notes, homework, teats and quizzes.
2.    Work must be made up within the same number of days absent, for example, absent for 3 days then have 3 days to get HW in for full credit.

Extra Help:
1. I am available for extra help almost every night except the first two Mondays of the month (Faculty/dept meetings) and by appointment.
2. Students need to seek help as soon as possible.
3. Tutoring is also available during Academic Assistance on Wednesday.
4. Team time extra help with me on Wed. or Fri. depending on scheduling

 EXTREME SCIENCE
COURSE OVERVIEW

    The science curriculum for grade 8 contains three major topics.  They are astronomy, geology, and an introduction to chemistry.  Each topic is covered on a trimester basis and the textbooks will be rotated accordingly.  Inquiry and problem solving are included with the units.  Special emphasis is placed on skills necessary for high school science.

EXTREME SOCIAL STUDIES

Classroom Procedure and Student Responsibilities

Classroom Behavior:
    Courtesy and Respect for classmates and the teacher at all times.

Preparation:
    Students need to bring their Textbook, Pen, Completed Homework, folder and Three Ring Binder to class daily.  Students must be seated (In Assigned Seats) and prepared for class at the designated time.

Textbook:
    Each student will be issued a Textbook.  The book is to be covered at all times.  Failure to do so will result in detention.  If the book is lost/damaged the student is responsible for the “replacement value” of the book.

Homework:
    Homework is given a minimum of twice weekly.  Homework is to be handed in on time or no credit will be given.  There is no reason that a homework assignment should be late with the exception of illness.  My      E-Mail address (Mrdercole@cox.net) is provided so that you can contact me if you are ill or if you have any questions about an assignment or a class.  This will allow you to keep up with the work and avoid having late or missing assignments. The E-Mail address should only be used for educational purposes. 

Cheating:
    Cheating is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.  The person cheating and the person allowing someone to cheat will both receive zeros on the assignment, detention, and the parents will be informed.

Grading Criteria:
Tests 25% / Quizzes 25% / Homework 25% / Participation 25%

Test and Quiz Schedule:
    Tests are always announced.
    Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.

Extra help is always available upon request either before school or after school.  See me for more details.  However, students are encouraged to seek extra help during Team Time and Academic Assistance Time.
