Team Expectations

To meet the goals stated for our team, each student must be aware of the following team expectations:

1. Be on time for class.

2. Students will hand in homework on time. Late assignments will not be accepted, unless there is a note from a parent with a good reason explaining why the homework was not completed.

3. Books must be covered and brought to class each day. Please avoid "sticky" book covers.

4. Pens and pencils must be brought to class each day.

5. Students must have a planner and necessary textbooks and supplies for class each day.

6. Proper grammar, punctuation, and correct spelling should be used in all classes.

7. To make the best use of time, students are expected to carry independent reading materials with them.

8. When a teacher is absent, students are expected to adhere to team standards.

9. Display a positive attitude; be courteous and respectful of all students and teachers. Gum chewing and improper language will not be tolerated.

10. All make-up work is the responsibility of the student. If you have been absent, then you must find out what you have missed. You must make arrangements to make-up class work, homework, tests, quizzes, etc.

11. Extra help is always available.

Grade Six English/Language Arts Criteria 2007-2008

Mrs. Hayden

Purpose and Goals:
The grade six English course is a standards based integrated language arts program that combines a study of the elements and forms of literature with instruction in grammar, process writing, and vocabulary. The goal of this course is to build upon and strengthen each student's reading comprehension, speaking, critical thinking and analytical skills, grammatical usage, spelling, writing effectiveness and vocabulary development. In addition to basic skills, methods will be reviewed throughout the school year to help students with organization, test preparation, note taking, study techniques, and overall study habits.

General course information:
Literature check quizzes may be given on the day a reading assignment is due. The purpose of these quizzes is to demonstrate that the reading has been completed and this allows for more active participation in class discussion, projects, group work, and literature circles. Homework can be expected daily sometimes it will require a written piece or involve studying notes and handouts. All tests and projects will be assigned with advanced notice. English assignments are written on the homework board and available to be checked at any time.
Independent reading time will be scheduled within the school day and is encouraged to be done at home each evening. We will explore at least two new genres each quarter and students will frequently write in reading logs. More specific information regarding reading books to meet the national standards will be forthcoming.
Writing - Students will develop skills in the areas of expository, narrative, descriptive and persuasive writing. Students will be taught what is called in the trade Smiley Face tricks that will enhance more descriptive and original writing.
Texts:
Literature and Language Gold Level, McDougal, Littell (Covered)
English 6 Blue Level, Silver Burdett and Ginn (Covered
It is school policy that lost books are paid for before another one is issued.

Extra credit opportunities are provided at teacher discretion.

*Valuable advice
" Keep neat, dated and accurate notes because notebooks will be reviewed quarterly and graded.
" Homework is expected on time to receive full credit. No credit will be given for late work. Write assignments in agenda book every day and view it every night.
" All written work must be neat, have margins and a complete heading.
(Team model provided). I will not accept papers with frayed edges.
" If you have difficulty with cursive then you may print. The computer may be used for homework but you must be a good typist and capable of setting margins and tabs. No fancy lettering, it becomes very difficult to read.
" Assessments with a grade below 70 will be sent home for parent signature and returned the following day. If this is done two points will be added to that grade.
" Extra help is available after school at 2:20. Do not wait until a failed test or quiz is returned in order to get assistance.
" I reserve the right to alter these requirements during the school year for the improvement of the class.

Science
Mrs. Lonardo

The sixth grade curriculum includes investigations in Cells, an Heredity, Earth's Waters, and Bacteria to Plants. Your child will participate in many hands-on science labs, projects, and activities throughout the school year.

The students will be using a series of three textbooks at different times during the school year. At approximately 1/3 of the year, I will collect one text and issue another. This will continue until all three textbooks have been used. Each text costs $20.00 if lost, an $7.00 if the binding is damaged.

Students are required to bring their textbook, a one-subject notebook, a pen and pencil, and AR book to every class. At times they will be required to bring a set of colored pencils, which they should leave in their lockers until needed.

Any student who is absent must see me upon returning to school to make up missing work. Homework assignments are posted in the classroom.

The breakdown of the grades is as follows:
Tests (count twice) and quizzes 50%
Projects and participation 20%
Laboratory experiences 20%
Homework 10%

I have gone over a safety contract with your child, which he/she has signed and must be taken seriously to prevent injury to your child and other children. At no time will I allow inappropriate behavior during labs. Consequences may include removal from the lab and a written report in lieu of the lab experience.

If you have any question or concerns, feel free to contact me through a note or phone call.
