Mathematics is a universal language that allows us to make sense of the fundamental principles, thoughts, ideas, patterns, problems, and phenomena surrounding us and communicate our understanding of these concepts. The Cranston Public Schools mathematics program is dedicated to motivating and educating all students to develop a deep and complex understanding of mathematical concepts, become “real world” problem solvers, and think critically to solve a myriad of challenging investigations.
We believe all students are capable of learning mathematics and must have access to a challenging, high-level curriculum, with strong differentiated supports. The Common Core Standards are the foundation of our curriculum. All students are provided with a high-quality, coherent, well-articulated curriculum, from elementary through high school, in a guaranteed and viable construct.
Mathematically proficient students are able to communicate verbally, numerically, symbolically, and graphically through the use of the Standards for Mathematical Practice:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- Reason Abstractly and quantitatively
- Constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others
- Modeling with mathematics
- Using appropriate tools strategically
- Attending to precision
- Looking for and making use of structure
